Night three at the SF Jazz Center. Things ease in slowly with Kite. Jay finds a note he likes and sticks with it. Shaun takes the outro on organ and cooks at an almost inaudible volume. Whitecap is slow and swinging. Bullock takes the solo. He and JT are left alone for a while. JT brings in Grown Folks. Bill takes the first solo, moving between different sounds. Bob plays over the outro. Young Stuff gets a solo from Maz. Justin takes the outro solo on keyboard and grooves. Nate sets up Tio Macaco. He keeps the solo short and sweet. Shaun brings down the house with Sleeper. Magda joins the crew for her arrangement of Gonzaga’s Vem Morena. The band closes out with a very succinct version of Shofukan, with a trumpet solo from Justin.

The second installment exploring the strong influence of American soul on Jamaican reggae in the 1960s and '70s, this wonderful set dips into the rich vaults of Clement Dodd's famous Studio One recording facility, and while it clearly shows the soul roots of the tracks collected here, it also works independently as a marvelous sequence of reggae gems even without that deeper angle. Included here are such stunners as Ken Boothe's "Thinking," based on the song by American soul singer Garnet Mimms, Jacob Miller's "Westbound Train," written by Dennis Brown off the rhythm for Al Green's "Love and Happiness," and a pair of glorious instrumentals by Jackie Mittoo, "Jumpin' Jehosophat," a version of Syl Johnson's "Is It Because I'm Black," and "Fancy Pants," which works off of Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On." Also obvious here is the huge impact Curtis Mayfield and the Impressions had on Jamaican reggae artists as evidenced by the Heptones' take on Mayfield's "Choice of Colours," and Cornel Campbell's elegant transformation of another Mayfield song, "Ten to One." Again, this set works even without thinking about the song sources, and that unique, upside-down, and skewed sense of Jamaican rhythm makes each of these cover versions a thing unto itself, derived from but still somehow apart from the original American singles. This is how great music communicates and transforms each to each across all manner of political and cultural borders, and this ongoing relationship between Jamaican and American musicians is a fascinating dialogue to follow.

Today, as a member of acclaimed jam masters The String Cheese Incident, Hollingsworth is revered by both peers and fans for his ability to write and perform in a mosaic of styles, from rock to classical, ragtime to bebop.

Playing in SCI has allowed Kyle unrestricted access to the world of music, and has bestowed on him the kind of fearlessness a composer needs to flirt with such disparate genres. Those who’ve seen SCI know that they can jerk from funk to bluegrass on a chord change. “In the jam world, where there are no set ways of doing things, we’re not afraid to move in and out of genres,” he says, “and because of that I’ve learned to be creative, not only onstage but in the studio. I can get on board with something pretty quickly. You have to.”
