Phish A Christmas Gift from Trey, December 1985

"25 years ago in December 1985, Trey gave a cassette tape of music to family and friends labeled “A Christmas Gift from Trey.” A very low gen (digitized) version of this analog tape was circulated on bt.etree in August 2009 (Side A, Phish 11/23/85 Godard, and Side B, Trey’s 4-track Project), along with some historically interesting filler (e.g., an a capella “Frankenstein” from Fish left on Paluska’s answering machine in 1990). Also, in December of last year, an excellent Phish blog wrote about the genesis of Side B of this Christmas-gift-tape, and offered it up for download (along with the filler that I’d circulated) as well: please see Dog Gone Blog.

Happy holidays from Phish.net and The Mockingbird Foundation!"

Grateful Dead - 30 Days of Dead 2018 (2018)

Tracklist:
1. China Cat Sunflower > I know You Rider - 1973-09-24 - Pittsburgh Civic Arena - Pittsburgh, PA
Hint:
These two songs were joined in 1969 and would stay together at most shows until 1995.
Answer:
Pittsburgh, PA, Pittsburgh Civic Arena - September 24, 1973
This is from the first leg of the Fall Tour of 1973, which ran from 9/7/73 at Nassau Coliseum to 9/26/73 in Buffalo, NY.

2. Help On The Way>Slipknot!>Franklin's Tower - 1984-04-17 - Niagara Falls Convention Center - Niagara Falls, NY
Hint:
Three songs that left the repertoire as a sequence in 1977, but was revived in 1983.
Answer:
Niagara Falls Convention Center - Niagara Falls, NY - April 17, 1984
Help>Slip>Franklin's came back in 1983, stuck around until 1985, and then returned in 1989 until 1995.

3. Uncle John's Band > I Need a Miracle - 1988-12-28 - Coliseum Arena - Oakland, CA
Hint:
One of these songs was never considered for use in a mayonaise AD, one was.
Answer:
Coliseum Arena - Oakland, CA - December 28, 1988
This Uncle John's Band came out of Space, and led into a Miracle that included one of the best improvisational jams of the late Brent era.

4. Truckin' - 1971-12-04 - Felt Forum - Madison Square Garden - New York, NY
Hint:
Turlock, CA loves this song; it went straight to the top of the charts, numero uno, there.
Answer:
Felt Forum - Madison Square Garden - New York, NY - December 4, 1971
This is the opening song of the opening of a four night run at the Felt Forum in NYC.

5. Doin' That Rag - 1969-04-25 - Kinetic Playground - Chicago, IL
Hint:
A song that was played nearly 40 times, all in the same year.
Answer:
Kinetic Playground - Chicago, IL - April 25, 1969
Doin' That Rag debuted in January 1969, and was a staple of shows in 1969 until the end of September, when it was dropped for good.

6. Black Throated Wind > Deal - 1991-05-12 - Shoreline Amphitheatre - Mountain View, CA
Hint:
Two tracks, one each from Bob's and Jerry's solo debut records.
Answer:
Shoreline Amphitheatre - Mountain View, CA - May 12, 1991
Black Throated Wind was around from 1972 to 1974, and then returned after a 16 year hiatus in 1990, where it would remain until 1995. Deal was part of the Dead's repertoire from 1971 until 1995, played more than 400 times.

7. I Know You Rider - 1970-05-01 - Alfred College - Alfred, NY
Hint:
Our first repeat in this year's "30 Days of Dead", but in a remarkably different arrangement.
Answer:
Alfred College - Alfred, NY - May 1, 1970
This was recorded the night before Harpur College, and features the acoustic Grateful Dead harmonizing beautifully on a song that was interchangeably joined electrically with China Cat and played acoustically like this during this era.

8. Shakedown Street - 1994-10-15 - Madison Square Garden - New York, NY
Hint:
A long, jamming show-opener from one of the last Grateful Dead tours.
Answer: Madison Square Garden - New York, NY - October 15, 1994
This version of Shakedown Street was at one of the final Madison Square Garden shows, with their last show there being a few days later on 10/19/94.

9. Liberty - 1993-03-29 - Knickerbocker Arena - Albany, NY
Hint:
A late era Garcia-Hunter song that was often played as an encore.
Answer:
Knickerbocker Arena - Albany, NY - March 29, 1993
Liberty was the last up-tempo songs by Garcia and Hunter, to go along with the beautiful, slower-tempo'd ballad songs like Days Between, So Many Roads, Lazy River Road.

10. Black Throated Wind - 1974-02-22 - Winterland Arena - San Francisco, CA
Hint:
Our second repeat of this year's "30 Days of Dead", but being nearly two decades earlier than our previous version this year, we thought that'd be ok.
Answer: Winterland Arena - San Francisco, CA - February 22, 1974
There's plenty of difference in this version of Black Throated Wind compared to the 1991 version a few days ago: one drummer, and different keyboard players. Plus a different sound system and recording technique, so it sounds extremely different.

11. Lazy Lightning > Supplication - 1976-09-30 - Mershon Auditorium - Ohio State University - Columbus, OH
Hint:
A song sequence new to the comeback year, where it would stick around for nearly a decade.
Answer:
Mershon Auditorium - Ohio State University - Columbus, OH - September 30, 1976
Originally a Kingfish medley, Bob brought Lazy Lightning>Supplication to the Grateful Dead when they came back in 1976. It'd stick around until Halloween 1984.

12. Samson and Delilah - 1978-04-18 - Pittsburgh Civic Arena - Pittsburgh, PA
Hint: A song that was around for nearly two decades, and usually played on a specific day of the week, particularly in later years.
Answer:
Pittsburgh Civic Arena - Pittsburgh, PA - April 18, 1978
This version of Samson and Delilah is positioned in a rare-post Drums spot in the show, coming right out of a typically wild Rhythm Devils from this era.

13. Estimated Prophet > Eyes of the World - 1980-08-30 - The Spectrum - Philadelphia, PA
Hint:
A combination that was created in 1977, and was quite common until 1990, when the "Dead" largely flipped it on it's head.
Answer:
The Spectrum - Philadelphia, PA - August 30, 1980
Estimated Prophet and Eyes Of The World were first joined together shortly after Estimated debuted in early 1977. They were played together quite often until 1990, when the more common variance was Eyes Of The World>Estimated Prophet.

14. Reuben and Cherise - 1991-03-17 - Capital Centre - Landover, MD
Hint: You could count how many times the "Dead" played this on one hand, all within a few months of each other.
Answer:
Capital Centre - Landover, MD - March 17, 1991
This Jerry Garcia Band mainstay from 1978 was busted out by the "Dead" at this show at the Cap Center, and was played four times in total before being retired by the "Dead".

15. Throwing Stones > Playing in the Band (reprise) - 1991-03-25 - Knickerbocker Arena - Albany, NY
Hint:
On the way to being a standard show-closer, but with a big twist.
Answer:
Knickerbocker Arena - Albany, NY - March 25, 1991
Throwing Stones generally went into Not Fade Away in this era, and occasionally Lovelight, but here there's a big twist as it heads into Playing In The Band, reprised from the Playing that was started two nights earlier on 3/23/91.

16. That's It For The Other One > Cosmic Charlie - 1969-01-17 - Unknown Venue - Santa Barbara, CA
Hint:
A couple of song's from the "Dead's" 2nd and 3rd albums, including the first full "Dead" version of one of them.
Answer:
Unknown Venue - Santa Barbara, CA - January 17, 1969
This excellent SB show features an intense Other One suite, plus the first performance of Cosmic Charlie by the full band; they'd played it three months earlier without Bob and Pigpen.

17. Bertha* > Greatest Story Ever Told - 1983-12-30 - San Francisco Civic Auditorium - San Francisco, CA
Hint:
A classic show-opening combination from the 1980's, featuring two songs debuted on the same day a dozen years earlier.
Answer:
San Francisco Civic Auditorium - San Francisco, CA - December 30, 1983
Both of these songs debuted 2/18/71 in Port Chester, NY, and in the 1980s were commonly joined to open a show.

*Mary, the web host, responded to my question about the 10-11second gap in Bertha @3:59. There won't be a fix for it. This is her response after checking with Dave,
"We heard back from Dave, and long story short, the source is that way."
From inquiries in the past about other glitches, my understanding is that Dave only uses the source and does not pull recordings from the other usual sites like archives.org.

18. Brown-Eyed Women - 1979-10-25 - New Haven Coliseum - New Haven, CT
Hint:
A song that was one of the longest-played and most-played in the "Dead's" repertoire.
Answer:
New Haven Coliseum - New Haven, CT - October 25, 1979
Debuted in August 1971, Brown-Eyed Women was played almost 350 times by the Grateful Dead, one of the most-played Garcia-Hunter songs.

19. Deal, Playing In The Band, Loser - 1971-10-31 - Ohio Theatre - Columbus, OH
Hint:
A trio of Grateful Dead classics that debuted on solo records.
Answer:
Ohio Theatre - Columbus, OH - October 31, 1971
All three of these songs debuted in February 1971, and would appear on Jerry's and Bob's respective solo records in 1972.

20. Feel Like A Stranger > Ship Of Fools - 1986-03-31 - Providence Civic Center - Providence, RI
Hint:
A somewhat rare 2nd set opener, and a classic from the mid-1970s.
Answer:
Providence Civic Center - Providence, RI - March 31, 1986
Feel Like A Stranger was more commonly played in the first set, and Ship Of Fools was always a treat.

21. Cassidy > It Must Have Been The Roses - 1984-06-14 - Red Rocks Amphitheatre - Morrison, CO
Hint: Two Grateful Dead classics that were originally on solo records.
Answer:
Red Rocks Amphitheatre - Morrison, CO - June 14, 1984
Cassidy first appeared on Bob's Ace album in 1972, and didn't become part of the repertoire until 1976 (aside from one 1974 performance), and Roses originally appeared on Hunter's excellent Rum Runners album in 1974.

22. Cumberland Blues > Dire Wolf - 1970-12-31 - Winterland Arena - San Francisco, CA
Hint:
A couple of song's that were a big part of the "Dead's" transition from psychedelic pioneers to Americana music practitioners.
Answer:
Winterland Arena - San Francisco, CA - December 31, 1970
Both of these songs debuted in 1969, and were included on their first of two 1970 masterpieces, Workingman's Dead.

23. Casey Jones - 1995-04-01 - The Pyramid - Memphis, TN
Hint:
A rare non-live concert song here on "30 Days of Dead", a song that hadn't been played live in a couple of years, and would never be again.
Answer:
The Pyramid - Memphis, TN - April 1, 1995
Casey Jones was sporadically in the repertoire from 1977-1984, and then after an eight year hiatus, it returned for four versions (three in 1992, one in 1993). This soundcheck is likely from 4/1/95 in Memphis, although without definitive proof, we'll just call it 1995 Soundcheck (4/1/95 TBC).

24. Easy Answers - 1993-06-23 - Deer Creek Music Center - Noblesville, IN
Hint:
A rare Weir-Hunter collaboration.
Answer:
Deer Creek Music Center - Noblesville, IN - June 23, 1993
This was the last Weir-Hunter collaboration, following Corinna as the rebirth of a songwriting partnership that had ended two decades earlier.

25. China Cat Sunflower > Doin' That Rag - 1969-08-30 - Family Dog at the Great Highway - San Francisco, CA
Hint:
A double dose of Aoxomoxoa "Dead".
Answer:
Family Dog at the Great Highway - San Francisco, CA - August 30, 1969
Before China Cat Sunflower was joined with I Know You Rider later in 1969, it had a free-flowing outro that could go many places, including to Doin' That Rag.

26. Bertha, Mexicali Blues, Scarlet Begonias - 1974-08-04 - Civic Convention Hall Auditorium - Philadelphia, PA
Hint:
Some outtakes from a terrific live Grateful Dead album.
Answer:
Civic Convention Hall Auditorium - Philadelphia, PA - August 4, 1974
These three songs were cut from Dick's Picks Vol. 31, a four CD compilation from 8/4,5,6/74 in Philadephia and Jersey City.

27. Bird Song - 1984-10-15 - Civic Center - Hartford, CT
Hint:
A standout track from Jerry's first solo record, and played extremely well as usual during this era.
Answer:
Civic Center - Hartford, CT - October 15, 1984
From 1982 to 1988, the Dead played Bird Song at the Hartford Civic Center five times, including at my first show on 3/26/87.

28. Scarlet Begonias > Fire On The Mountain - 1979-12-03 - Uptown Theatre - Chicago, IL
Hint:
A duet of Hunter songs, brought together in 1977 and rarely seperated; one whose music was written by Garcia, one by someone else.
Answer:
Uptown Theatre - Chicago, IL - December 3, 1979
Scarlet Begonias and Fire On The Mountain were joined in 1977 at the very first show Fire was played, and stuck together mostly with a few very cool expections over the next 18 years.

29. He's Gone - 1972-10-02 - Springfield Civic Center Arena - Springfield, MA
Hint:
A long version of a relatively new song that would have been unfamiliar to most in attendance aside from tape traders and tour heads.
Answer:
Springfield Civic Center Arena - Springfield, MA - October 2, 1972
This terrific version of He's Gone was played just before Europe '72 was released, and although by this time it was often used as a launching pad for other big jams, here it's played a beautiful stand-alone rendition.

30. Playing In The Band > Crazy Fingers > Uncle John's Band - 1989-12-29 - Oakland Coliseum Arena - Oakland, CA
Hint:
Three classics, debuted in 1969, 1971, and 1975.
Answer:
Oakland Coliseum Arena - Oakland, CA - December 29, 1989
These three classics of the Grateful Dead's repertoire were played together at this openng night of the New Year's run in 1989, with plenty of great MIDI effects.

Jerry Garcia Band - Acoustic on the Eel {Bonus Disc}

Electric on the Eel celebrates the Jerry Garcia Band’s 3 beloved, biannual performances at French’s Camp on the Eel River in Piercy, CA: August 29, 1987; June 10, 1989; and August 10, 1991. The events were co-presented by Bill Graham Productions and the Hog Farm which, as producer & Hog Farmer Bob Barsotti describes "lent them an air of familiarity not always present in the urban settings in which Jerry usually played.” The audience and band both delighted in the free spirited and fun-filled atmosphere, setting the stage for 6 magical sets of music featuring the quintessential JGB line-up: Garcia, John Kahn (bass), Melvin Seals (organ), David Kemper (drums), Gloria Jones (vocals) and Jacklyn LaBranch (vocals).

The collection features several unreleased rarities including the seldom performed “See What Love Can Do”, “Twilight”, “Lazy Bones”, and “I Hope It Won’t Be This Way Always.” Other rarities from the release include “Everybody Needs Somebody to Love”, “Struggling Man”, “Lay Down Sally” and “You Never Can Tell [C’est La Vie]”.
