Thank you! Was at this show!
ReplyDeleteI too was at this show. It was REALLY good. I mean, I expected it to be good. I'm no longer surprised at how well Mayer fits in with the boys. IMO he's the best all around lead guitar player they've had since Jerry. Herring was excellent. One of the best players in the world, and his style with the Dead was very psychedelic and fit perfectly with the band. Warren Haynes. Fantastic singer who did justice to most all of the Jerry tunes he sang. However, as great a guitar player as he is, I never felt 4
ReplyDeleteOops. Anyway, I never felt Haynes style fit very well with the Dead. He's a truly fantastic Blues and Rock player, but he isn't particularly psychedelic. I dug the 2004 Herring Haynes Weir lineup, but it didn't live up to my expectations. I spent a lot of time trying to figure out why, seeing as they had done it so well with P&F previously. What I decided was that with the addition of Bobby, and his need to be heard (which I guess I understand considering he's a founding member and all) it didn't really give any one player the room he need to stretch out properly. I think Mayer is the best fit so far because he does all of those things pretty damn well. He's a great player who does a fantastic job of capturing the Jerry sound without resorting to straight mimicking. He's also a really good singer who can do justice to all the Jerry ballads. He also seems to have brought a younger vibe to the band. Bringing a newer dimension to the music. Look no further than this version of The Wheel. One of the best I've ever heard, including Jerry version. I have a cpl friends who refuse to go see this band simply because he's in it. Really quite annoying. For all you Mayer haters out there, you need to get over it and give the guy a chance. This is not the pop John Mayer you'he familiar with.
DeleteYou're right about John Mayer. When Trey Anastasio did the Fare Thee Well tours, I thought he'd be wonderful playing with Grateful Dead, but he wasn't. Then I saw that John Mayer was with Dead & Company and I had real doubts that he would fit in with the Dea's music, but I gave them a listen and he's a revelation.
DeleteThanks again for this. Dead & Company have been a real discovery for me. The second set in particular looks wonderful. I look forward to hearing it.
