When we began to release the music of William Onyeabor, we did not know that he’d never played a show in his entire life – though we did know he probably had no interest in doing it now. So, we put together a band to play his music live. It was never intended to compete with his original work, but meant to share his music in a live setting.
Together with music director Ahmed Gallab of Sinkane, we formed “The Atomic Bomb! Band”, which over two years came to feature nearly fifty amazing musical guests and collaborators. For each show we did, we would ask different musicians to join, always trying to make it a little different, or a little more special for where we happened to be.
After 20 shows around the world, we found it so enjoyable and special that we wanted to document the group in a studio. So after playing at Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival in the early summer of 2015, we went into the beautiful Blackbird Studio, in Nashville, Tennessee . Two years later, we have these recordings that we would like to share with you all.
Featured on this album: Jamie Lidell, Alexis Taylor (Hot Chip), Luke Jenner (The Rapture), Charles Lloyd, Money Mark (Beastie Boys), Pat Mahoney (LCD Soundsystem), Ahmed Gallab (Sinkane), Jason Trammell, Ish Montgomery, Johnny Lamm, Jas Walton & Jordan McLean (Antibalas), Lekan Babalola, Kofo the Wonderman, Felicia Douglas, & Amanda Khiri. Big thanks to all those who have been part of this wonderful project! This will only be available in stores for Record Store Day 2017, 4/22.
