Phish’s 1991 horn tour spanned fourteen shows featuring the Giant Country Horns, a 3-piece horn section with Dave “The Truth” Grippo on alto sax/percussion, Russell “the Killer” Remington on tenor sax, and Carl “Gears” Gerhard on trumpet. Grippo and Remington (along with Joey Sommerville) had added horns to the ‘Lawn Boy’ studio recording of Split Open And Melt, and sat in at Phish shows and local pop-up gigs with the Johnny B. Fishman Jazz Ensemble – a pseudonym Phish deployed to play jazz standards with horns.
They decided to tour with the GCH and undertook extensive rehearsals to develop horn arrangements for a roster of Phish songs and jazz tunes. In addition to new material, the horns added to Phish’s improvisational pallette and to their visual presentation (GCH performed in matching white and purple tuxedos). The septet traveled in two vans starting with a free show July 11th in Burlington, VT and ending July 27th in Atlanta, GA. Mid-horn tour on July 19th, Phish and The Giant Country Horns played Somerville Theatre in Somerville, MA. This was Phish’s sixth show at this venue of seven to-date.
Set I highlights included The Landlady > Bouncing Around The Room and David Bowie, which re-referenced Bouncing in the intro. Next came Fee > Cavern and horn tour’s second You Enjoy Myself, with Frankenstein teases and added congas. Set I closed with Gumbo and The Doors’ Touch Me, a new addition for horn tour sung by Fish. After a special one-time showing of the CoSA animated ‘Esther’ film during setbreak, Somerville’s set II got underway with Suzy Greenberg > Divided Sky before I Didn’t Know, which featured Fish’s mom Mimi Fishman on her first onstage vacuum solo. Trey’s introduction said it all, "without this woman, none of us would be here!" My Sweet One came next, followed by a sizzling Magilla > Tweezer with some inspired Fish rap/testimony. Set II wrapped up with horn tour’s only The Mango Song, and Big Black Furry Creature From Mars. The Encore was Lawn Boy with a muted trumpet solo > Runaway Jim, which was sung as “Runaway Yim” by fan request.
